This is a documentary project about the life of older people in the historical part of Beijing called Hutong. The history of the Hutong begins in the 18th century, these are narrow streets on which houses in the traditional Chinese style are built. Modern construction more and more absorbs this historical part of the city, so the original hutongs remain fewer and fewer every year.
People of different classes live here, with different destinies, united by common interests and joint activities. They collect Hu Lu pumpkin and then sell it to tourists. Pumpkin Hu Lu is one of the most popular Chinese talismans of health, it brings joy, gives a good mood, clears the space around itself and the thoughts of its owner. Also baked sweet potato is one of the most popular dishes in old Beijing.
The Chinese love for everything red is explained by their belief that red, like a loud sound, scares away evil spirits. They decorate their homes with traditional red lanterns all year round.
